在过去20年中，随着中国摆脱强制文化并对外开放，中国向世界呈现了惊人的发展速度和风采。在新中国，个人的灵感和表达已经涌现出来，这种变化为中国人民及其领导人提供了思考范围超越政治、社会和经济需求的时间和活力。当新中国为世界领先的建筑师、表演者和设计师提供了舞台时，新中国的人民在以令人惊讶的迥异方式表达自我。这种创意的爆炸性增长并不局限于都市和富人，而是遍及各个社会阶层。
In the last twenty years or so, as China emerged from an imposed culture and opened up to the world, it did so with spectacular speed and colour. In the new China, the aspirations and expression of the individual have come to the fore and this change has given its people and its leaders the time and energy to think beyond the immediate political, social and economic needs. Even as this new China provides a canvas to the world’s leading architects, performers and designers, its native population is expressing itself in amazingly diverse ways. This explosion of creativity is not confined to the urban megapolises or the wealthy. It pervades every class of society.
在中国历史中，中国的创意特征具有一些独特性。在像中国这样的社会中，政治体制和社会秩序对理想行为施加了一套准则和规则，并形成了作为理想范例的僵化模式。许多人意识到了通过摆脱规范来表达自我的需求。创意在于意想不到，在于打破生活本身的单调性和常规性。
The characteristics of creativity in China are somewhat unique in the nation’s history. In a society such as China where the political system and social order impose a set of rules and precepts about ideal behavior, and create stereotypical models that serve as examples of the ideal, many people feel the need to express themselves by breaking away from the norm. Creativity is about the unexpected, about breaking the monotony and routine of life itself.
创意的实际和功能应用是最重要的。如果没有应用，创意就失去了它的意义。许多普通人的努力得到欣赏也就因为他们从实际意义上增加了一些价值，或者他们以非常功能化但意想不到的方式解决了一个问题。提升我们的生活质量是预期的创意功能之一。通过创意，人们可以发现更大的经济或社会价值，这增强了他们的自尊，并获得了其他人的钦佩。第三方面比较有趣，也再次挑战了常规：创意是冥思苦想的结果。创意不是突然迸发的火花，而是勤奋思考的成果。创意人员必须努力工作，必须寻找新动向（这本身就很困难）。创意人员必须思考对于其本身或对于社会的应用和结果。创意的第四方面在于创意灵感源于生活的事实。生活产生了许多挑战和机会，人们只有开动脑筋才能得出创意。

Second, the practical and functional applications of creativity are paramount. Without application, creativity loses its meaning. Many of the common person’s efforts are appreciated simply because they add some value in a practical sense, or they solve a problem in a very functional, but unexpected, manner. One of the expected functions of creativity is to enhance our quality of life. Through creativity, people can find greater economic or social value, which enhances their self-esteem and earns the admiration of others. The third dimension, and an interesting one that once again challenges convention, is that creativity is the result of thinking very hard. It is not a sudden spark that you have; but rather the outcome of industrious thinking. Creative people have to work just as hard; they have to look for what’s new—which is tough by itself. They must then think about applications and the result, be it for themselves or for a larger society. The fourth dimension of creativity lies in the fact that it is inspired by life. Life throws up many challenges and opportunities, and one only has to dig into one’s memories to come up with ideas.

It is no small wonder that businesses and individuals are profiting from this explosion of creativity. From artisans selling wire artifacts on the streets to homemakers creating knick knacks to supplement the family income, to college students lipsyncing their way to fame and being signed on by corporates, to art galleries auctioning paintings for a million renminbi, to real estate moguls hawking properties by promising a ‘creative’ living environment, they are all smiling their way to the bank.
